Last Doctor Visit! Is It All Over??

This afternoon we had another doctor visit. Actually we had two, but it was in the same office at the same time, just with two doctors. She tried to charge me two copays, but that didn’t fly…I only paid one. Good Lord…anyway…

No boot, no bandage. Just foot!

The first doc is the one that we have seen the most often. He is an Orthopedic Surgeon and a Plastic Surgeon that specializes in feet and hands. Did you know they even specialized that much??? I didn’t. Anyway, we really like him, and Derek loves him. Today was our last visit with him, at least for now. I am assuming he will be the one that does the reconstructive surgery on his toe, which I will get to in a minute. When we finally got my amazingly well done bandage off, he took a close look and was very happy with what he saw. For the first time since the accident, there was no exposed tissue!! There are some

See! Just scabs, dry skin, and scar tissue!

scabby-looking things and some dry skin and scar tissue, but nothing else. That means the skin graft took completely, and we no longer have to bandage him up. He can run around barefoot like a normal boy! He did suggest he wear socks or an ace bandage to prevent rubbing, but it is no longer a requirement. Derek is cool with socks. That is actually surprising as Derek is not the most cautious little boy, but when it comes to his “aye,” he is very nervous. This is a good thing because he will more than likely be careful. That is a foreign concept for my little guy, so it will be interesting to see how that works out. As the doc left the room, he told me he didn’t have to see us anymore! Wow!

The second doc we saw is the Orthopedic Surgeon that was in charge of the broken tibia and fibula. I don’t talk about that much, as there isn’t a whole lot to say. The fibula was broken all the way through, the tibia was broken most of the way through, and now has a bowed deformity, but because he is three, as the bone grows, the deformity will disappear, so we don’t have to do anything about it. At this time next year, it will be gone. Basically, the bones broke, he wore a cast, then a boot, and today, the doc said he was almost 100% healed up. He no longer needs the boot! Wow! No bandages, no boot, what a visit. We need to go back to see this doc in 4 weeks, but that will be the very end of doctor visits for this scenario. Amazing, huh? Just over two months and we are already at this point.

In a year or so, we have to go back and get him reconstructive surgery to build a tendon that will keep his big toe from pulling downward permanently. He will never be able to pull his toe up on his own, but at least the deformity will be gone. We have some time before that happens. That will make for some interesting posts in the future! ;)

The most visible sign of progress since the accident!

So all this means it is finally over, right?? Well, not really. The physical effects are basically done, but the mental ones still remain. Last night, Little Jason and I went out and placed a few signs in yards together. He was a great helper, and wanted to place one of the signs that was across the street from where we parked. I reluctantly agreed, and told him to be very careful and watch for cars. I flat out said, “You can’t get hit by a car!” He agreed. I nervously sat in the driver’s seat while he got out the sign, but I couldn’t do it. I hopped out and ran over to him. I explained that I was too scared and he had to walk with me. He accepted that with grace. We placed the sign and moved on. I had to fight back tears when I got back into the car. There was not a car to be seen, but I was still filled with fear. I am not sure that will ever go away. Then tonight, Jason has a nightmare about he and I getting hit by a car and dying. The kids are always voicing their concern about that. When the puppies escape out the front and run around the neighborhood, many of our fears come out. The kids start crying because they are afraid the pups will be hit by a car and die. If Derek is chasing them, Troy and Jason will run him down, telling him he can’t get hit by a car or he might die this time. Ashley will sometimes wander out while I am chasing them and scare the heck out of me and her brothers. We practically run each other over trying to get to her, blind with fear. Is it over? No. Not by a long shot, but it is better. Together we will work out the rest…over time.
