The kids were all ready for bed. I decided it would be nice to bring Daddy some coffee since he had to work on Labor Day, so before they all went to bed, we all piled into the car, stopped by McDonalds, and went to see Daddy. I had a nice evening planned for when I got home, and it did not include a trip to the ER.
I had stepped out of the van and was talking with Jason when I heard the three boys wrestling in the back. I ignored it – I was only going to be a minute. Apparently that was all he needed. We have a pile of firewood in the back of the van that a friend gave us. While they were wrestling, Derek fell on a stick that was “sticking out” of the wood (no pun intended ), and cut the corner of his left eye on the top and bottom, and was bleeding pretty good. It was fairly deep and real close to his eye, so it was decided that I would be taking another trip to the ER, despite my good planning.

There is too much blood to see it real well, but he has a deep cut on the top of the eye and a not-so-pretty one on the bottom of his eye. The top one freaked me out a bit because of how close it was to the eyeball.
We stopped home real quick to let the dogs out and to get blankets, coloring books, and crayons, and off we went. We got here three hours ago, and we are STILL waiting to see the doc. We got here at 10:30 and it is now 1:30. I am starting to question if he even needs stitches. All three boys have been great. They have colored, watched TV, and gone to the bathroom about 10 times. No one is crying, freaking out, or misbehaving. I only wish they would go to sleep.

Here are all the kiddos when we first got there. They were starting to get tired even then, but they wanted to color, so they all just sat at a kiddie-table and colored for about 30-45 minutes.
Ashley spilled my coffee within minutes of us getting here, and then she walked in it with her footie PJ’s, so her feet were wet. She wandered around, trying to pull all the tissues out of the tissue boxes, but eventually gave up when I removed them all out of her reach. She finally got so tired she couldn’t take it anymore. Unfortunately, rather than sleep, she chose to cry. She cried on and off for about an hour. An ex-marine Corporal, also waiting to be seen, held her a few times and calmed her. They got along great. It was pretty cute. Finally, she came to me and just gave up. She is currently passed out on my lap. I am flanked by two boys and covered in a blanket watching cartoons.

Here is Jason, seconds before he fell asleep, me after hours in the ER with 4 kids, and Ashley passed out on my lap. Derek is two chairs away on one side, and Troy is just out of the picture of the couch with us under the blanket on the other side of me, also just minutes from falling asleep.
Derek is two chairs away, watching cartoons and fighting sleep himself. More details as they happen!

There’s Derek watching TV in the waiting room at the ER. He finally fell asleep 10 minutes before I had to get him up to get stitches. That went over well…
All four kids fell asleep, so of course, they call us ten minutes later. We waited for almost four hours before we went in. The doc took one look and agreed that we should do stitches. Well, actually, he first suggested they use plastic surgery tape and asked me if my very active 3-year-old would leave it alone and not take it off…obviously we didn’t go to the Children’s hospital. I said he would probably have it off in 15 minutes on a good day. He THEN agreed we would do stitches. We ended up with four of them above the eye. He gave him the dissolvable ones, so at least we don’t have to bone back (or remove them ourselves like we did with Troy’s foot two years ago). Derek was not too happy about getting these stitches. I think he was more upset about being woken up, though. He was screaming the whole time the doc was looking at the eye and cleaning it off. That is just not like Derek. Then a nurse came in and placed a cotton ball with a numbing agent onto his eye, and he fell asleep again while she just stood over him, holding the cotton on his cut. Finally, the doc came in and I was asked to restrain him. Having had enough practice holding him in a hospital, I “assumed the position.” Derek was crying during the whole ordeal, but I am pretty sure it was more because he was woken up than because it hurt, although he did tell me it hurt after the doc was done. (It looked painful as all hell, but I know they numbed it for him…if only he had seen the sharp object he jabbed into his eyelid and pushed through the cut and the skin…oooouuuuch! Poor baby. Again.
All the kids are now awake, but very tired, so they are doing the silly-giggly thing that kids do when they are bored and tired. That nurse better hurry up or I am just going to jet out of here. We have been here long enough!

The worst of the wound is above his eye, but it is really close to the eyeball. Every time I try to clean it, it starts to bleed again.
Now we are waiting for our discharge papers so I can get them home and in bed. It is 3:30am so I guess school is out. We have a funeral to go to anyway, so I guess it was a good day for another trip to the ER if it had to happen. Sheesh!
**Quick update** We got home a little after 4am and the kids plopped down hard and are fast asleep. I am not far behind them. Derek is doing great!
